Auburn is situated in Alabama's Lee County. It is the biggest city in the east of Alabama and has a population of 76,143. It is the capital of the Auburn Opelika Metropolitan Area. The Auburn-Opelika, AL MSA with a population of 158,991, along with the Columbus, GA-AL MSA and Tuskegee, Alabama, comprises the greater Columbus-Auburn-Opelika, GA-AL CSA, a region home to 501,649 residents.Auburn is a historic college town and is the home of Auburn University. It is Alabama's fastest growing metropolitan area as well as the 19th fastest-growing metro region in the United States since 1990. U.S. News named Auburn as one of the top ten best cities in America for 2009. The informal name for Auburn is "The Loveliest Village on the Plains", a reference to a line in Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village: "Sweet Auburn!" The most loved village in the plain..
